Alameda County Behavioral Health and Office of Ethics Service presents: The Cultural Toolbox: An Indigenous Perspective on Deep Healing

Description: The cultural toolbox: an indigenous perspective on deep healing will be taking a deep dive into the community to find healing practices and strategies for mental health and addiction recovery. This session is a follow-up to one conducted in 2020 and designed to deepen knowledge and its practical application. Anton Treuer is Ojibwe, from the Leech Lake Reservation in northern Minnesota. His service as a spiritual leader and native space has equipped him with an authentic perspective on the most important work of our time and our individual and collective quest for healing. This session thus addresses directly the national CLAS standards.

“Principal Standard 1: ‘Provide effective, equitable, understandable, and respectful quality care and services that are responsive to diverse cultural health beliefs and practices, preferred
languages, health literacy, and other communication needs.’

Learning Objectives:

• By the end of the training, participants will be able to identify 3 community-defined healing practices used today by the Indigenous population of Alameda County to address “Historical Trauma”.
• By the end of the training, participants will be able to identify 3 primary components of racial identity (color, culture, consciousness).
• By the end of the training, participants will be able to list 3 distinct health concerns that Native American nations in California list as top priorities for redress.

Anton Treuer, Ph.D., is a Professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University. He received his B.A. from Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University in 1991, and his Ph.D. in History from the University of Minnesota in 1997. He is the author of 19 books and has received over 40 awards and fellowships which include one from the National Endowment for the Humanities. His equity,
education and cultural work has put him on a path of service around the region, the nation, and the world.

Continuing Education (CE) credit is only provided for County and ACBH contracted Provider staff. This course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of CE credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences; Alameda County Behavioral Science Health Care Services (ACBHCS) is approved by the California Assoc. of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for the target audience of this training, Provider No. 65749; for Addiction Professionals by the California Consortium of Addiction Programs & Professionals Education Institute (CCAAP_EI), Provider No. 4C-04-604-0622l for RNs by the California Board of Registered Nurses, BRN Provider No. 12040; and for Psychologists as an approved provider by the California Psychological Assoc., Provider No. ALA006. To complete an ACBH sponsored virtual training, attendees must achieve a score of at least 70% on the post-test(s).
