Best Practices in Serving LGBT Individuals and Families

April 10, 2012

A FREE, Continuing Education Workshop provided by LGBT-TRISTAR through the Community Alliance for CLAS, a project funded by the California Department of Alcohol & Drug Programs.

This training will explore essential information about sexual orientation, sexual behavior, sexual identity, gender identity and gender expression; discuss the nature of homophobia and transphobia; provide strategies for educating others about the value of LGBT-inclusive services; and explore solutions to LGBT-related client concerns. Five recommended standards of Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) populations, based on National CLAS Standards, will be presented along with action steps and examples to help carry them out.

By the end of the training, participants will:

. Use appropriate LGBT-related terminology for written forms and oral communications

. Recognize seven potential treatment-related needs of the full diversity of LGBT clients

. Identify ten ways agencies can become more welcoming and inclusive of LGBT individuals and families

. Define homophobia and transphobia

. Identify ways that homophobia and transphobia impact service provision

. Describe strategies for educating staff members and volunteers about the importance of LGBT-inclusive services

. Describe strategies for addressing homophobia and transphobia amongst clients

. Identify steps your organization can take to improve services for LGBT populations

Meeting the Challenge: Incorporating Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards into Our Continuum of Care

Description

This training will provide an overview of the concepts and principles of cultural and linguistic competence, and enable participants to meaningfully incorporate these critical components into their work. Participants will learn how to assess their services and align their work with the 14 National CLAS Standards developed by the US Dept. of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health.

 

Objectives

Through hands-on, highly interactive training modules, participants in this training will:

  • Establish a working definition of culture, its role and purpose
  • Explore personal values in relation to client or participant values
  • Imbed cultural outcomes in each step of their planning process
  • Become familiar with the 14 CLAS standards and their function as an organizational framework

Dr. Tamu Nolfo, Project Manager for the Community Alliance for CLAS, is a

Certified Prevention Specialist and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation fellow,

who has worked in the substance abuse field for 20 years.  She has helped

build multiple coalitions, successfully advocating for prevention programming

and was handpicked as an advisor for the State of California Department of

Alcohol and Drug Programs through three administrations.

San Diego Stakeholder’s Open Forum

Be a voice for your clients – your program – your community. Participate in the discussion. Let us know the challenges you’re facing related to alcohol and other drug use, service delivery, and strategies to strengthen systems of AOD services.

Join with your peers, neighbors (EVERYONE is welcome) and service providers (ALL disciplines welcome) to share your thoughts and ideas. Some topics in this open forum might include:

• What influences one’s decision to seek services?
• How can language capabilities be enhanced?
• What makes for a welcoming service environment?
• Who is not being effectively reached? Why?
• What kinds of policy/systems change needs to happen?
• What are the challenges?


Attendees will also receive information on cost-free consulting services available through the Community Alliance for CLAS Project.

Increasing Cultural Competency for Working with African Americans

In honor of Black History Month, internationally recognized trainer Roland Williams, MA, LAADC, ICADC, NCAC II, ACRPS, SAP will provide counselors, case managers, clinicians and other social service providers with information and strategies designed to improve cultural competency for working with African Americans – children, youth, adults, families and communities.

Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention: Working Effectively with High Risk Youth–La Puenta, CA

He specializes in working with resistant clients and criminal offenders. Mr. Ayala is Clinical Director of Smith and Jones Inc, the first full service abstinence based substance abuse and non-chemical addictions clinic in Amsterdam, Netherlands which serves both adult and adolescent populations.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder–La Mesa, CA

As much as 5% of the general population may be living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.  People with FASDs may look and sound normal, but their brains are not.  FASDs encompass a range of symptoms from hyperactivity, behavior problems, poor judgment and learning disabilities to severe mental retardation.

Learn how to:

  • Recognize the patterns of fetal alcohol damage.
  • Screen informally for neurological strengths and weaknesses.
  • Tailor interventions to maximize your  clients’ or child’s success.

This training will benefit child welfare services, alcohol and drug counselors, public health nurses, and mental health professionals.

Family Centered Substance Abuse Treatment – Sacramento, CA

In 2009, SHIELDS for Families received the prestigious James Irvine Foundation’s Leadership Award for their innovative work in two areas of substance abuse treatment: 1) Up-Front Assessments, and 2) Family-Centered Substance Abuse Treatment.  

In collaboration with ONTRACK Program Resources, and the Department of Alcohol & Drug Programs – California Women’s TA & Training Project, SHIELDS is presenting trainings on these exceptional models throughout the state, including Northern California.
